Take Charge of Anxiety & Stress: Mindfulness Course

Our series of mindfulness workshops are designed especially for those who suffer from anxiety and stress, utilizing mindfulness practice to cultivate present-moment awareness and remove a lot of the fuel that powers these emotional responses.

We’ll delve into a variety of topics across each session, provide guidance in developing an ongoing mindfulness practice, and review compelling evidence of success in applying mindfulness to improve anxiety and stress levels.

Program Benefits

The beauty of mindfulness is that it has many strong benefits for our minds and bodies, including helping to improve our anxiety and stress levels. Take a look at just a few of the benefits one group of our previous participants reported after completing a previous Anxiety, Stress & Mindfulness workshop series.

Better able to disrupt storylines that cause anxiety
%
Improvement in no longer overthinking things that have already happened
%
More confidence in the ability to deal with thoughts that bring on anxiety
%
Increase in feeling of control over thoughts, moods, and feeling
%

Less Stress & Anxiety

Through mindfulness practice, we cultivate present-moment awareness without judgment, paying attention to what is happening now. This reorientation removes a lot of the fuel that powers anxiety and stress.

Less Self Sabotage

Mindfulness shows us that we can cultivate kindness and compassion – to ourselves first, and then others – and helps us to transform from self-sabotage to self-kindness. We identify less with our negative self-talk, and resonate more with who we actually are.

Less Powerlessness

Developing and maintaining a good mindfulness practice can help put you in the driver’s seat in relation to your thoughts, feelings and emotions. You learn a new way to deal with damaging thought patterns.

Andrew Safer

Mindfulness Coach & Published Author

Hello, and welcome! I’m Andrew – a mindfulness coach and published author based in St John’s, Canada. I have been presenting mindfulness workshops in the community since 2010, and founded Safer Mindfulness in 2014.

Well over 200 people in small groups have completed the popular “Anxiety, Stress & Mindfulness” workshop series (renamed “Take Charge of Anxiety & Stress”) over 10 years. These groups have included a wide range of individuals: doctors, nurses, psychologists, social workers, IT professionals, entrepreneurs, businesspeople, administrators, artists, community educators, teachers, government employees, and seniors, as well as the unemployed.

When Memorial University researchers studied this program in 2016, there was an average 40% improvement in the evaluation scores comparing first to last sessions for 40 participants, who met in 2.5-Hour sessions.

My first mindfulness book, Anxiety, Stress & Mindfulness: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Wellness, was published in 2018, which we will use in the course for readings, references, and discussion.

Mindfulness in the Workplace: Cultivating Well-Being at Work, published in June 2024, brings mindfulness practices, exercises, and principles to the world of work. This book is internationally acclaimed by mindfulness leaders in five countries.

I very much enjoy helping people substantially improve their quality of life through the power and beauty of mindfulness, and I’d love to have the opportunity to do the same with you!

“Practicing mindfulness is a good way of pulling me out of the past or future, which triggers anxiety, and back to the present moment, which I can cope with better.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Haven’t found what you’re looking for? Read through some of the most common questions we get asked and find your answers here.

The first workshop in our Take Charge of Anxiety & Stress Mindfulness Program is completely free! Just click on one of the Register buttons on this page and you’ll be able to book the first session to see what you think before you buy the rest. If you’d like to book all 6 sessions in the mindfulness program including the free session, you can also click on one of the Register Now buttons to select that option and the cost will be $195 Canadian dollars in total (averages $39 per weekly workshop).

Everyone is welcome! This program will be particularly helpful for anyone who has difficulty with anxiety – with or without a diagnosis – that could be related to a health issue, workplace circumstances, family issue, general condition, etc. It could be anxiety and panic, or in combination with another mental health issue (most commonly, depression).

This is not a clinical program, but rather a secular mindfulness program, so you’ll learn ways to deal with anxiety that are different from what you would learn in the conventional, medical model.

We all have stress in our lives, but how we deal with it is key. Instead of trying to eliminate it completely, learn to nip stress in the bud, and manage it effectively.

We’ll be running our weekly workshops online via Zoom, and also In-Person. For remote access, all you need is a computer or a smartphone, an internet connection and yourself to begin each session, and once you’ve registered for the program online we will send over details on how to join each session.

The workshops will also take place at The Lantern event space (35 Barnes Rd, St. John’s, NL, Canada), for those who are nearby and would like to attend in-person.

Andrew teaches a variety of topics over the course of the program, which you can find in the course details on this page here.

The weekly sessions include a check-in, mindfulness practice, presentation on a topic, and Q&A / discussion.

In between sessions, you’ll receive a worksheet and links to relevant articles/videos.

You’ll receive a free copy of Andrew Safer’s book as part of the program – Anxiety, Stress & Mindfulness: A Do-It-Yourself Guide To Wellness. This book is endorsed by some incredible individuals including psychiatrists, psychologists, psychotherapists, an organizational psychology professor, and a CEO of the Canadian Mental Health Association (in Newfoundland and Labrador).

If you’re attending in-person we will give you a physical copy, and if you’re joining us online we will send you a digital copy (if you’d still like a physical copy, we can send one to you for just the cost of the postage – $6 in Canada).

The Take Charge of Anxiety & Stress mindfulness program will begin with the free introductory session via Zoom and In-Person on Thursday 3rd October, and run every Thursday after this across 6 workshops in total, finishing on Thursday 14th November (we will not meet on Halloween).

The workshops will run in the evenings between 6:30PM and 8:00PM EST (and for the 1 hour intro workshop, from 6.30PM to 7.30PM EST).

Learning the art of mindfulness in this program will put you in the driver’s seat in how you deal with anxiety and stress. You will have a better understanding of them, and how to work with thoughts and emotions that make anxiety and stress worse.

Mindfulness is a practice whereby we learn to become more aware of the present moment, and through doing so are better able to experience things as they are rather than through judgments, biases, and preconceptions.

The mindfulness program will last 6 weeks from Thursday 3rd October to Thursday 14th November (with a week off in-between due to Halloween). The first intro session will last for 1 hour in the evening between 6:30PM and 7:30PM EST, and every weekly session after that will be 1.5 hours between 6:30PM and 8:00PM EST.

No, all you need is yourself! And to arrive with an open mind and interest in what this is all about.

As a mindfulness practitioner of 55 years and a mindfulness instructor for 30+ years (authorized by Shambhala International of Halifax, Nova Scotia), Andrew developed this program based on his extensive mindfulness and meditation training and background, combined with research. His book, Anxiety, Stress & Mindfulness: A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Wellness is endorsed by a variety of health care practitioners including psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychotherapists, as well as educators.

The International Mindfulness and Meditation Alliance recognizes Safer Mindfulness as an accredited training provider of Andrew’s Mindfulness-Awareness Meditation Instructor Training Course.
